Biographical Notes

Eva Balint is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist in private practice in Sydney. 

Helga Coulter is a Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. She is a Member of the British Council of Psychoanalysis, Member of the Lincoln Clinic and Centre of Psychotherapy, Member of the Victorian Association of Psychotherapists and Member of the Australian Association of Infant Mental Health. She teaches and supervises and is in full-time private practice.

Amanda Dowd (ANZSJA, IAAP) is a Jungian analyst and psychoanalytic psychotherapist with a private psychotherapy and supervision practice in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. She has a particular interest in the vicissitudes and mythopoetics of relationship, the formation of self, mind, identity, cultural identity and trauma. Her current work includes an exploration of the traumatic effects of migration for both individual and culture and the interrelationship between psyche and place. 

Esther Faye is a registered analyst in private practice. She is the current president of the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis and teaches in its Master of Psychoanalysis program at Victoria University. She is also an Honorary Research Fellow with the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne, where she supervises postgraduate students. She has published widely in the fields of psychoanalysis and history. 

Elisabeth Hanscombe is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and writer who has published a number of short stories and articles in magazines and journals throughout Australia. She is currently undertaking a PhD at La Trobe University on the topic ‘Theories of Autobiography: Life writing and the desire for revenge’. She is interested in the ways in which Object Relations theory intersects with that of narrative and the autobiographical. She edits book reviews for Australasian Journal of Psychotherapy. 

Brian Hunt is a Sydney psychoanalyst working with adults and children. He is seeking a publisher for his biographical novel Anois is Aris. 

Lydnall Kleinschmidt is a child psychiatrist and psychotherapist working at the Mater Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane. She has recently returned from London where she worked and trained in psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic. She is a member of the Queensland Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association.

Andrew Leggett is a Brisbane psychiatrist and psychotherapist. He works for Queensland Health as a senior staff specialist psychiatrist in continuing care. He is Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Queensland, where he has completed a research masters degree in Creative Writing and is a provisional doctoral candidate in Media and Cultural Studies in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History. He has published poetry, fiction, book reviews and papers on psychotherapy, social research, ethics, and aesthetics. He has been a guest editor of Media/Culture Journal and is the current editor of the Australasian Journal of Psychotherapy.

Tim Metcalf edited the anthology Verbal Medicine: 21 Contemporary Clinician-Poets of Australia and New Zealand, winner of the ACT Writing and Publishing Awards for poetry in 2007, and subject of a 2008 Radio National special (available on-line). Tim’s poetry has been published around the world including in medical journals such as The Lancet. During his time as a volunteer for ANU Medical School he began developing an on-line course in literature and medicine now at http://timmetcalf.com.au/index.php?id=29. He has spent his medical career in the bush, and is currently company medical officer to Bega Cheese. His most recent book of poetry is The Solution to Us (Ginninderra 2008). ‘Stork’s Child’ has been previously published in Tirrah Lirrah.‘Support the Head’ first appeared in the newsletter of the Australian Society for the Medical Humanties.

Pamela Nathan is a clinical and forensic psychologist and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice in Kew, Melbourne. She is a member of the VAPP and is currently a member of Council, the Training Committee and the Public Relations Committee. She has worked in public sector clinical and forensic settings for the past fifteen years and has participated in research, consultation and supervision work with these organisations. She has publications on sex offending and forensic interventions in mainstream health services. Her original training was a sociologist and she taught for a decade in the universities with research publications in Aboriginal health and cross-cultural issues. She continues to consult with the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress in Alice Springs.

Denis O’Loughlin is a psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist practicing in Melbourne. He edits book reviews for Australasian Journal of Psychotherapy.

Paul Schimmel is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, originally from New Zealand, currently living and working in Sydney.  

Maurice Whelan grew up in Ireland. He is a psychoanalyst and writer. He has written books on education, literature and psychoanalysis. Boat People is his first novel. Since 1992 he has lived in Sydney.
